Selecting the Right Musical Entertainment for Your Wedding

The pros and cons of Live Music versus Disc Jockey for your reception

Before you choose a DJ or select that perfect band for your wedding celebration, reflect on the thoughts and visions you have for the ceremony, reception and beyond. Specific consideration to your own musical tastes, theme or style of the wedding and of course your budget are critical first thoughts. Once you have that figured out Consider the following:

Atmosphere

The type of music you select should complement the intended ambiance of your wedding. For example, if you want a subtle, yet romantic atmosphere, then a harpist or string quartet might be a consideration. Maybe you are having a toes-in-the-sand beach-side wedding where a calypso band would fit right in! Whatever your intention, set the mood with the right kind of music, but remember this is one of the things most people will remember about your reception.

Audience

Everyone is there to help you celebrate your big day, but they have expectations too! Carefully review your guest list to better understand who will be in attendance for your wedding. Based on the demographic, you will want to consider the type of music that will keep them entertained and enjoying the festivities. If your affair will be mostly family, with a high number of them being over 50 then the latest alternative rock band may not be the best choice.

Space

There are some very unique spaces which make great venues for your special day. Consider the space you have available to work with. If the space is segmented and chopped up, or if there is not ample space to house a band then a DJ may be the best way to go.

Variety

When your wedding guests are multi-generational assume that music requests will be wide and deep. Assuring that a vast selection across genres and time-periods are available. If your attendees are all similar in age and musical taste, then you can consider a music selection more targeted for those expected to be in attendance.

Bands

Pros

  • Live music is entertaining, even to non-dancers.
  • Great bands can bring a lot of energy and excitement to an event

Cons

  • Bands tend to be more expensive than DJs.
  • Bands are also unable to provide the variety of music you receive with a DJ.
  • If space is limited it might be tough to squeeze the entire band into one area.

DJs

Pros

  • DJs tend to be more budget friendly
  • DJs come prepared with special requests and can have all your favorite songs in queue.
  • Charismatic DJs can also act as emcee and keep the event rolling along
  • DJs require less space for set-up and performance than most bands.

Cons

  • For guests who don’t dance a DJ can be a bit underwhelming
  • A DJ with little personality, or who fails to click with the vibe of the audience, can bring the event down quickly.

5 Traditional Venues in New Hampshire

Happy Wednesday!

Taylor continues her tour of traditional venues & now she’s taking you to New Hampshire this week. Check out the great places she found.

Enjoy!

1. Atkinson Resort & Country Club

As a former employee, I love the Atkinson Country Club! They offer seven event rooms to choose from and is truly the whole package. The Legacy Ballroom, most popular for weddings, is phenomenal. It holds up to 320 guests and has a beautiful deck that overlooks their 18 hole golf course, which would be perfect for cocktail hour on a summer night! I love their gazebo that is located just outside of the Legacy Ballroom, where you could have your ceremony. A few summers ago, I attended at a wedding  here and trust me, when I tell you the pictures are stunning. The landscaping around & beyond the gazebo will take your breath away!

2. Brookstone Event Center

I worked a few local venues and here’s another one! {I know your might be saying just how many venues has this girl worked at?} Brookstone focuses on “one wedding at a time”. They give your special day their undivided attention and the staff is incredible. Kasia and Alex will meet your every need to make you feel relaxed and prepared for your wedding day. If you’re looking to have an outdoor ceremony they have a beautiful covered area that overlooks an adorable pond and waterfall.

3. The Granite Rose

No, I can’t brag and say I have worked here too…. I wish I could because its beautiful! They offer two event rooms, Embassy Room and Terrace Room and I have to say my favorite is the Terrace Room. I love the large windows, the round architecture and the chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. They offer onsite ceremonies whether you want an indoor or outdoor one! The Embassy Room has an elegant, contemporary flair. Skylights, abundant French doors and the octagonal head table area are adjacent to the outdoor deck. It allows the natural light and sunshine during the day and gives you the feeling of dancing under the moon and stars in the evening.

4. The Bedford Village Inn

I first came across the Bedford Village Inn I was blown away while I was looking for venues that could host an outdoor party for a friend. This place looks very cute and quaint from the front view, but when you see if from the back, you would think you’re at a Hollywood party… its over-the-top! They offer a number of cool things… outdoor dance floor, djs, high top tables, ice sculptures and a patio overlooking the backyard. You will not be disappointed if you decide to take a tour!

5. Sky Meadow Country Club

To end our tour…the last, but not least, my favorite wedding venue since this is where I’m booking my own wedding ☺!} The Sky Meadow Country Club is located in Nashua, NH,  a private club, tucked away behind the Sky Meadow condominiums. When I went to tour here I was greeted by the director, Lynn, who listened to every last detail I wanted on my day and she assured me they could accommodate my every need.

They are updating their patio this spring and they have recently just refurnished their dance floor which I might add, is gorgeous! I loved that the patio was right in front of a waterfall, where some of our pictures would be taken and our guests would be able to enjoy seeing us as well. I loved the wide selection of food they offered and I could customize my dinner menu. A bonus is they work with The Crowne Plaza, who provide your guests with a shuttle service. How great is that?!

The Merrimack Valley Golf Club is conveniently located in Methuen, Massachusetts. Just 30 minutes from Boston. The club offers four event rooms each with their own patio, beautifully polished hardwood floors and cathedral ceilings. It overlooks 150 acres perfect for evening pictures with an amazing sunset background.

When looking into planning my own wedding the Merrimack Valley Golf Club was one of the first places I looked into. When I saw all of the outdoor pictures I was amazed! The award winning cuisine is something that makes them stand apart from other event centers in the area.

Simply Elegant Catering caters each event and they are the winners of the Merrimack Valley Best Caterer award for 10 years. Book you’re wedding with the Merrimack Valley Golf Club and wow your guest with an unforgettable day.

3. Tewksbury Country Club

The Tewksbury Country Club, my personal favorite in the area, is located in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. This venue is perfect for a “rustic” themed wedding. It has 1 Grand Ballroom and 2 other rooms for smaller functions. The Grand Ballroom has beam architecture all over the room, huge windows, and a stunning stone fireplace.

Another thing that really makes the country club stand out is their grounds. They have a beautiful golf course for pictures and an adorable stone bridge over a waterway. If a “rustic” themed wedding is you’re thing, check this place out!

If you’re really looking to impress your guests this is the place for your wedding. Since 1875 The Vesper Country club has been one of the most popular venues in the Tyngsboro, MA area. The Peabody Essex Museum is another unique setting for a wedding! There are certain museum spaces available for rent, but the most common wedding spot at the museum is in the main Atrium. The Atrium is the heart of the museum and with the spectacular arched glass roof overhead, you see why this is the most popular spot in the museum! The Atrium has the capacity to hold 125-300 for a seated dinner, 270 with a dance floor, and 550 for a standing reception….so as you can tell this is a spacious spot!

Tracy and I were able to go to the Hawthorne Hotel and check out this space and can I tell you it was just breathtaking! The Grand Ballroom was absolutely gorgeous with so much character and charm. The delicate chandeliers hanging from above gives off such an elegant feel. The Hawthorne Hotel also has various reception rooms based on the size of event you want, so they pretty much can accommodate from a small event to a large scale reception. This facility is also a hotel, so guests are able to stay right there so everything is all in one building which is convenient.
